The Sanity-Saving Guide to DisneyWorld: How to Take a Trip with your Vacationeers…

ree

Look, I'm a Disney Adult. My blood type is Dole Whip, and I plan my Disney days with the precision of a master Imagineer. I can tell you the fastest way to get on Space Mountain, where to find the best churros, and the exact moment to book a Lightning Lane.

My family, however? Bless their pixie-dust-filled hearts. They think "vacation" means sleeping in, and their idea of a good time does not involve running through a theme park at 7 a.m. So, if you've ever had the soul-crushing task of planning a Disney trip for these... Vacationeers... I'm here for you.

Here's how I survive multi-generational Disney trips with relatives who haven't quite yet found the second star to the right, and still have a magical time:

1. Don't force early morning starts

Forget the 6 a.m. wake-up call and the frantic rope-drop sprint. We are not doing that. Nothing says "I love my family" like dragging them out of bed at dawn to stand in lines. We're going to trade a 30-minute wait time for a full day focused on the bare necessities. Believe me, you will find the magic is worth the trade-off.

For this trip we are going to take our time and grab a cup of coffee on the patio or a nice breakfast at a reasonable hour, then head to the park when we feel like it. Sure, the lines might be a bit longer, but our moods will be infinitely better, and we'll still like each other 5 minutes into this trip.  I find that the most magical moment of the morning is not the rides, but the happiness you share with your family.

This is where my genius comes in, darling. We'll still take advantage of the pre-planning that Disney offers. It's simply a matter of magnificent design. You can still use these benefits because Disney allows you to reserve  Lightning Lanes seven days in advance if you're staying on property, or three days in advance if you're staying off. Simply estimate what time your group is going to be ready and plan your Lightning Lanes accordingly. You get the perks without the early-bird misery because adventure is out there!

2. One Park, One Day

The art of "park hopping" is a beautiful thing, but for a group that finds the very concept of a theme park to be a vacation and not a sport, it’s a recipe for disaster. This is why we are committing to one park per day. That’s it. It removes all the stress of bus schedules and travel time and lets everyone enjoy the park without feeling rushed. And as the planner, I still get to find my Happily Ever After at the end of the day. If everyone's feeling ambitious in the evening, great we will "hop" to another park. but there's no pressure to do so.

3. Book Your Escape (a.k.a. Reservations)

The single best decision you can make is to plan ahead and get dining reservations, especially if you have a large group. You can make your dining reservations up to 60 days prior. Counting down the days until you can book is a magical journey in itself. Travel agents and Disney Adults are online the moment reservations open, racing for those coveted spots like guests running to see the fireworks show on Main Street. Make sure to mark your calendars! For our trip, we knew it would still be hot and humid, so we booked air-conditioned, sit-down restaurants for every lunchtime.

We call this our designated escape from the heat and crowds. More importantly, it prevents the inevitable, sweaty, hangry squabbles that turn vacations into va-hate-tions. These are the nice slices of peace, a chance to refuel, and offer civilized bliss.  I call it our very own Hakuna Matata moment.

4. It's About Magic, Not Mileage

My inner Buzz Lightyear wants to go "to infinity and beyond" on every ride, but the goal for this group is different. Just like the emotions in Headquarters, every voice deserves to be heard, because every one of us is here to find our own unique slice of magic. We're trading a high-mileage day for a high-magic day, and that's a trade I'll happily make for my sanity. Our group is interested in everything from rides to the animation experience, so we make sure everyone gets to pick an activity for the day. I find it’s the best way to avoid the silent treatment from the tweens or a full-on pout from Grandma because she didn’t make it all the way around the world at EPCOT.  After-all Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind.

Planning a Disney trip for a crew that doesn't share your obsession is a special kind of challenge. But it can be done, all it takes is a little faith, trust and pixie dust.

If you're ready to trade your spreadsheets for Captin Hook's treasure map and make sure your family speaks to you at the end of the trip, let's talk. I specialize in crafting personalized itineraries designed for maximum magic and minimal fuss. Your family might not appreciate your genius, but you will. After all, you'll be the master Imagineer of your own Happily Ever After.
